ADHD and ADD Coaching

The Director of Life Coaching Today is a therapist and certified life coach who also has a Masters degree in Psychology, has held a license as a school Psychologist in Virginia, and has over 10 years of experience working individuals and families with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/ Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). She has taught educational workshops about ADD/ADHD and the strategies to manage them. The majority of her coaching clients are adults diagnosed with ADHD.

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The three subtypes listed in the DSM-IV are:

ADHD Predominantly Inattentive Type
ADHD Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type
ADHD Combined Type

ADHD can be hereditary, and when found among members of the same family, each may have different traits of ADHD. There are different strategies for different people. No one strategy is for all people with ADHD. A coach working with clients with ADHD must adapt strategies to each individual's needs. Executive Function plays a large role in clients with ADHD. Dr. Russell Barkley (2000) described the lack of executive function as "an inability to manage current behavior so that future needs can be met." For example, a client with aspects of ADHD whose executive function is not working may have a hard time focusing in boring meetings.
